Danger! That concrete is hotter than you think.

I was at a doggie day care this week and a gentleman was talking about a different dog care center that was mostly concrete. He said there were folks who noticed something going on with the paws of the dogs at the play center. After listening to his story I realized it was time to post again about the dangers of hot concrete, red brick and asphalt for our four-legged friends.

Rule of thumb, if the air is hot, the asphalt is HOTTER!

A quick test you can do is touch the concrete yourself with the back of your hand for at least 7 seconds. This will help you determine whether the surface could be hot enough to blister your pups paws.

You will see numbers such as the image here that are pretty scary. Just make sure you are walking early enough in the morning and late enough in the evening in order to give the cement or asphalt time to cool.

Also, don't forget shade or sunscreen for your pet. Dogs can get sunburn and heat exhaustion just like humans. I feel so fortunate to be living here in the Bethany Village area. Forest Park trails are in the shade, open early and a fun place to take a cool walk.

See ya in the hood!
